General Teeth Whitening

What makes Opal teeth whitening products better than other leading brands?

Well, it’s simple! Opal™ is brought to you by Opalescence®, the world’s #1-selling professional whitening brand—trusted by 25,000+ dentists. We’ve been brightening up over 100 million smiles for the last 30 years, and we pride ourselves in only putting out safe, professional-caliber whitening products backed by dental science. All of our products are easy to use, great-tasting, vegan, certified gluten-free, and certified kosher. How’s that for a better way to whiten?

For a whitening brand you can trust to get you brilliant results every time, Opal™ by Opalescence® is the way to go.

What's the difference between Opal and Opalescence®?

Opal™ teeth whitening products were created to help you achieve brilliant results from the comfort of your own home. Opalescence® is our professional line of teeth whitening products, typically found at your friendly neighborhood dentist’s office. Both Opal™ and

Opalescence® work wonders, but here are a couple of key differences:

  • Strength Selection: Opal™ Prefilled Whitening Trays come in 6% and 11% options, giving you a choice in the whitening power you want. Opalescence Go™ Prefilled Whitening Trays, on the other hand, are professional-grade and usually only available through your dentist.
  • Patient Care: Opalescence Go™ Prefilled Whitening Trays include potassium nitrate and fluoride for dental patients in need of a little extra comfort.
How does Opal by Opalescence® teeth whitening work?

Our teeth whitening works by removing stains and discolorations from the enamel and dentin. The outer layer of the tooth is called enamel, and beneath the enamel is dentin. Enamel is thin and usually much lighter in color, while dentin is darker and makes up most of the tooth. Enamel can lose its color over time simply from age, but also from things like coffee, tea, tobacco, and other foods and beverages. Also, as we get older, our enamel can thin out, causing more dentin to show through, making the overall appearance of the tooth look less brilliant. The active ingredients in our whitening gels oxidize the discolored molecules deep down in your teeth to remove stains and whiten your smile comfortably. Plus, our original, patented formula is sticky and viscous, preventing the whitening gel from seeping out and ensuring your trays stay in place to brighten up your teeth.12

Do all Opal teeth whitening products use non-abrasive ingredients?

Great question! All Opal™ teeth whitening products are formulated to add brilliance to your smile in their own unique way. Let’s break it down for you:

  • Both our Classic and Gentle Prefilled Whitening Trays as well as our Whitening Tray Gel Refills use non-abrasive ingredients to safely brighten teeth.
  • Our Original and Sensitivity Relief Whitening Toothpastes use a mildly abrasive silica to effectively remove surface stains13 and keep your teeth glowing.
I see white spots on my teeth after whitening. What should I do?

If you have white spots on your teeth, they may become more noticeable during the whitening procedure. A few days after you’ve completed your whitening treatment, the white spots will become less noticeable. Continue your whitening treatment until you reach your desired shade.

Are there any aesthetic concerns I should be aware of prior to whitening?

Be aware that crowns and fillings do not whiten. If your teeth are naturally translucent, they may become more translucent, giving a gray or darker appearance, rather than a whiter appearance. Some types of staining can take long periods of time and may require that you consult your dentist for professional whitening options.

Where are Opal teeth whitening products made?

Our products are proudly made with love and care in South Jordan, Utah.

Do I need to refrigerate Opal teeth whitening products?

There’s no need to chill your Opal™ teeth whitening products! Just find a cool place for them to hang out and keep them handy for your brilliant routine.

Do I need to have an in-person exam or consult my dentist before using Opal teeth whitening products?

While you can go ahead and use Opal™ teeth whitening products without a special appointment, it's always a good idea to keep up with those routine dental check-ups. We recommend seeing your dentist before you start whitening, just to make sure you’re good to glow!

Are Opal teeth whitening products FDA approved?

Since our teeth whitening products fall under the category of cosmetics, they don’t require FDA approval. That said, all Opal teeth whitening products have been tested for safety and effectiveness according to international standards. Our products also comply with the cosmetic regulations set by the FDA, including the new Modernization of Cosmetic Regulation Act of 2022. (In case you’re wondering.)

Are Opal teeth whitening products ADA approved?

Currently, we don't have the ADA (American Dental Association) seal on our products. However, we're committed to providing safe and effective teeth whitening formulations designed to safely brighten smiles.

Can I whiten my teeth more than once per day?

Opal™ by Opalescence® Prefilled Whitening Trays and Refill Syringes for use with a dentist-provided custom tray should be used once a day to achieve the most safe and effective way to get that brilliant smile you deserve. If you’re interested in additional daily whitening, however, we recommend using Opal™ Whitening Toothpaste twice daily.

Can a child use Opal teeth whitening products? What are the age recommendations?

We recommend that these products not be used by children under 12 years of age. Safety first! As kids grow, their teeth and gums are still developing, and it's best to wait until they’re older before starting any teeth whitening treatments.

Are Opal teeth whitening products tested on animals?

No way! Opal™ teeth whitening products are cruelty-free and aren’t tested on animals.

Are Opal teeth whitening products vegan and/or kosher?

Yes! All Opal™ teeth whitening products are both vegan and kosher.

Are Opal whitening products gluten free?

Yes! All Opal™ teeth whitening products are gluten free.

Are Opal teeth whitening products safe for everyone to use?

Opal™ by Opalescence® provides a safe, comfortable way for most everyone to get a more brilliant smile. Results and treatment time may differ from person to person, depending on the stain and the level of whitening you’re looking for. Keep in mind, our products are not designed to whiten crowns, bridges, fillings and veneers.

If you have gum disease, worn enamel, cavities or exposed roots, we recommend talking to your dentist, so that they can help choose the teeth whitening option that’s best for you.

Will Opal teeth whitening products make my teeth sensitive?

Tooth sensitivity can happen sometimes after teeth whitening. Opal™ whitening has not been shown to weaken tooth enamel14, so if you feel any discomfort, there’s no need to worry! If your teeth feel sensitive, it’s usually temporary and should go away after whitening. There are also ways to treat sensitive teeth using products like our Sensitivity Relief Whitening Toothpaste. Talk to your dentist to find the best option for your smile.

Can I use Opal teeth whitening products if I am pregnant, breastfeeding, or undergoing fertility treatment?

Like with other dental or medical treatments, you may be wondering if teeth whitening during pregnancy, breastfeeding or IVF is safe. While no studies have been done on the safety of teeth whitening during pregnancy, the ADA suggests that clinicians may consider recommending that teeth whitening be deferred during pregnancy.6 We agree and recommend that pregnant or breastfeeding women and women undergoing fertility treatment don’t use teeth whitening products.

Do teeth whitening lights work?

Current research shows that hydrogen peroxide (the ingredient used in our Prefilled Whitening Trays) or carbamide peroxide (the ingredient used in our Whitening Tray Gel Refills) are effective in safely brightening teeth. Teeth whitening lights don’t add any more brilliance to your smile.7 In fact, some studies have shown that using them can even harm your lips and gums.8? So, it's probably best to skip the lights and stick to your Opal™ teeth whitening routine.

Do activated charcoal teeth whitening products work?

Charcoal can be messy and get stuck at your gumline, which isn't great for your dental hygienist to deal with. We recommend Opal™ whitening toothpaste which successfully whitens by removing surface stains and is gentle enough to use daily without damaging your enamel.

Can I use Opal teeth whitening products with crowns, veneers, fillings or other dental work?

Yes! It’s safe to use our teeth whitening products on both natural and unnatural tooth surfaces. Our unique formulations will not affect the color or shade of a crown, veneer, implant, filling or tooth restoration. But, you can use our products to whiten your natural teeth to better match your dental work.

If you are whitening your teeth before a bonding procedure, talk to your dentist. We recommend avoiding any whitening treatments for 7–10 days before a bonding procedure.9-11

How quickly can I whiten my teeth?

Every smile responds differently to whitening treatments and teeth whitening results may vary by age. Some stains and shades of teeth are easier to whiten than others. When whitening, keep in mind that the natural color of your teeth will affect your whitening results. Compare strengths and wear times for Opal™ teeth whitening products and talk with your dentist for help choosing the best option to add brilliance to your teeth.

How long do teeth whitening results last?

Opal™ teeth whitening products are formulated to provide lasting whitening results, leaving you with a brighter smile you'll love. However, there are a few things that can make teeth lose their brilliance over time. Things like genetics, diet, age, some medications (like tetracycline) and habits (like smoking) may affect how long your whitening results last. Luckily, all of our products are quick and easy to use, so you can keep your whitening routine going—and help your smile stay glowing.

Can I use expired Opal teeth whitening products?

We don't recommend using our products beyond their expiration date. It's always a good idea to keep your teeth whitening essentials fresh and up-to-date. Your smile deserves the best!

Is it possible to whiten a dead tooth?

Yes! It is possible to whiten a dead tooth. But, keep in mind that if you whiten all of your teeth at once, that dead tooth might still stand out. So, we suggest talking with your dentist to see how you can whiten that particular tooth to match your brilliant smile.

Once you've brushed all the whitening gel off your teeth, you're good to go and eat or drink whatever you like! Just keep in mind that some foods and drinks might leave stains on your whitened teeth, so remember to keep up with your whitening routine.

Should I avoid certain food or drinks like wine or coffee?

Can I use Opal teeth whitening products with crowns, veneers, fillings or other dental work?

Yes! It’s safe to use our teeth whitening products on both natural and unnatural tooth surfaces. Our unique formulations will not affect the color or shade of a crown, veneer, implant, filling or tooth restoration. The recommended wear time varies according to the formula strength:

  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 15%: 4 to 6 hours
  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 20%: 2 to 4 hours
  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 35%: 30 to 60 minutes
Can I eat or drink after whitening?

Once you've brushed all the whitening gel off your teeth, you're good to go and eat or drink whatever you like! Just keep in mind that some foods and drinks might leave stains on your whitened teeth, so remember to keep up with your whitening routine.

What if the whitening gel gets on my gums?

Not to worry! Just brush, rinse and remove any gel that gets on your gums. It is perfectly normal to feel some temporary discomfort when whitening teeth. These side effects will usually subside within 1-3 days after discontinuing use. If you're still feeling some side effects after you’re finished, we recommend reaching out to your dentist for help.

What happens if I swallow the whitening gel?

If you accidentally swallow a little bit of the whitening gel—that's okay! But if you happen to swallow a larger amount, make sure to drink lots of water and get in touch with your healthcare provider, just to be safe.

What are the active ingredients in Opal Whitening Gel Refills?

Opal™ Whitening Gels contain a powerful whitening ingredient -- either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide gels break down into water, oxygen, and reactive oxygen molecules. These reactive oxygen molecules oxidize the bonds of
discolored stain molecules. By changing the stained molecules, the tooth appearance becomes lighter17.

The full list of ingredients varies by strength:

  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 15%: Glycerin, Water (Aqua), Carbamide Peroxide, Xylitol, Carbomer, PEG-6, Sodium Hydroxide, Mentha Piperita Oil, EDTA
  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 20%: Glycerin, Water (Aqua), Carbamide Peroxide, Xylitol, Carbomer, PEG-6, Sodium Hydroxide, Mentha Piperita Oil, EDTA
  • Opal™ Whitening Gel 35%: Glycerin, Water (Aqua), Carbamide Peroxide, Carbomer, PEG-6, Hydrogen Peroxide, Xylitol, Sodium Hydroxide, Mentha Piperita Oil, EDTA, Sucralose
What is the shelf life for Opal Whitening Gel Refills?

How many treatments are included in each pack of Opal Whitening Gel Refills?
